Richmond, VA (in the historic River District)

I’m at a conference down here in Richmond, and last night I met some college friends at Julep’s since they had a Groupon to use and I have meal money 🙂  Otherwise, I would say that this restaurant is on the pricey side.  It is super cute and downtown, so the setting is amazing. It is advertised as “new Southern cuisine” and that’s exactly what it is.

We got a ton of food, but it was SO worth it!  I had Caesar salad as an appetizer, which came with a nice twist of strawberries on top.  Very good.  My friends split the fried green tomatoes and the shrimp and grits appetizers, which both looked amazing.  They said the tomatoes were a slightly different format from what they’d had before, but are a featured item and were delicious.

Main dishes, we tried a little bit of everything.  I got a scallop course which were the largest scallops I’ve ever seen.  They were presented with blackberry sauce and berries, which was an intriguing and actually really, really good compliment to the seafood.  The others had a grilled beef tenderloin, which was served with bacon and pimento cheese.  My friend was a little hesitant, but said the cheese was really the best part and added the kick the meal needed.  It came with fried okra that was nicely battered and in the natural form, not chopped up like it typically is.  The other entrée was the special of the night, duck.  Again, the meat was tender and perfectly cooked.  It was served with mashed potatoes.

Needless to say, there was nothing left on any of our plates at the end of the night. The next time you’re in Richmond and want a nice meal, check it out!
