Fantastic Fall Weekend

In my last post, Devil’s Backbone, I alluded to the fact that I was in central Virginia last weekend.  While that dining experience wasn’t the best start to the weekend, it picked up steam after that.  After dining, we headed up Wintergreen Mountain to stay at our vacation house.  Highlights of staying there include: a plaid, flannel blanket from the 70s that can be snapped up to make a sleeping bag, the games Take Off! and Bazaar, and the fact that when you lay down to sleep it’s like you’re in a cave it’s so dark and quiet. The next morning we got up “early” and took a .4 mile round-trip hike that goes straight down to an overlook.  It’s more of a scramble than a hike, meaning the path is basically laid out through the natural rocks/landscape of the mountain.  I love it and the view from the bottom is fantastic.

After the hike it was off to Charlottesville for the UVA vs. EMU football game.  Game time was 6pm so we had plenty of time to explore Grounds, see the changes, and eat at several of my favorite places: Mellow Mushroom and Arch’s.  I won’t do full restaurant review on those because I’ve been there a thousand times, but they are amazing and highly recommended.  In particular, the big soft pretzels at Mellow which you can get sampler style: one garlic/parmesan, one salted, and one honey/cinnamon.  Heaven.

Finally, it was time for the game and the ‘Hoos pulled off the W!  Our family pack of tickets included a free soda and hot dog which actually wasn’t bad.  And we certainly had a lot to sing and sway about, which is always nice.  Here’s a shot from where we chose to sit in the student section (hey, we’re getting old… no more standing front row).

We slept on the mountain again Saturday night and then stopped by the last of the trifecta: Bodo’s Bagel.  I love a good breakfast sandwich on a freshly made bagel with a side of a cold milk.  All in all, a fantastic fall weekend and trip down memory lane.  Have a safe Halloween everyone!
